Monday morning and all is going well. Yesterday, I didn't thinks so. He was moved from the ICU to a "regular" isolation room where the staff is a little less responsive and a little less willing to take my word for things. The main example was that the doctor had told the ICU nurses that he had to get up and walk..told Brian.."okay you've got to get your but out of this chiar often every day" but that message failed to get made in the form of a formal order. The ICU nurses didn't get around to it because he was going to be moved and the new nurses refused to help him get up because there was no written order and because they needed physical therapy guy to say so. But no physical therapy is available on the weekends. They pretty much ignored my pleas to help him get up and walk so I move into bossy mode (just short of bitchy) to pretty tmuch no effect. Brian counteracts my effect on the staff by being cute and charming. Nonetheless they weren't too happy with him because he got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. Since he had to unplug himself from evreything, that set off alarms and brought staff running.
Today, the pt guy did come, walked with Brian and walker for maybe 50 or 60 feet. He did well but is now exhausted. I'm now trying to be charming myself and mostly succeeding. Beter for Brian that way. Brian says hi to all . More later. Pat

  1. Good morning Pat,
Dick & I were just horrified to get home late last night & hear about all this- however, it really truly sounds as if Brian really is on the mend- it's excellent that he's extubated and sitting up and hungry!! I hope he studied enough for his test to at least get some applesauce. Glad to hear about the clearing lung crud (a really good thing) and it is truly impressive that he was able to walk so far. It may not seem like a long way to him BUT given all he's been through, it's stupendous. There's nothing like the right antibiotic, so Brian, keep up the good work. Dick and I are sending you strong thoughts and would love to help in any possible way, including dog care. It's been quite a ride, but sounds like you have turned the corner well and truly. Please call us for anything at all at 281-5395.

  3. Brian,
I am so happy to hear you're doing better. Just hearing that you are already back to offsetting bossy (or bitchy, pick your word) behavior is a sure sign that you are well on your way to being back to yourself.
I hope everything continues to go well. Keep up the charm :-)
    Love,
    Katie

  4. Pat and Brian- gosh it's good to address this to both of you. I'm so glad that you are making progress, Brian. We're all pulling for you. Besides, I'm sure the dogs want you home! Let's hope you can eat real food soon. I didn't like it when Jack got moved to a room that was not right across from the nurses station. I, too, felt like he got less attention. Let me know if there is anything you need me to do. Love, Nancy

  5. Hey Pat and Brian: Even though this comment will be labeled "Judith", it's coming from Rod. Its good to hear that you (Brian) are beginning to walk around, though your first steps were over the prostrate nursing staff, Pat having clobbered them! Now get onto some food! What will that take--Pat using a two by four on the food therapest? We're looking forward to a speedy recovery

  6. Tuesday morning -- Dear Pat -- Just returned home last night from eight days in California--days corresponding exactly to your days and nights at the hospital. And I was SO glad to be able to get your blog notes (had no internet connections on the road)and the VERY GOOD news posted yesterday morning!! Jetta and then Sally did a wonderful job of keeping us updated by phone, but it was just great to be able to read your own postings and know that things are going so well. Thanks for much for doing the blog! Ann Paden
